Chapter 8

I could cut people off, but Hillary made it hurt. She didn’t try to call me at all and in fact, flaunted herself all over the bar. It wasn’t that she was even trying to make me jealous, though she did. It was just who she was.

I saw her with one group one night or leaving on someone’s arm another. I watched people gather at her table to have a moment with her, as she smiled just right and charmed the room.

I knew that I was getting edgy as the days passed and the next night that I was off, we went out for dinner as a family. “Jess, I’ve noticed that you are a bit irritable as of late. Is everything all right?”

“Yes. Of course, it is. I think I’m just tired from the late nights or something,” I shrugged as Melanie looked at me. She knew that there was more to it, but I didn’t think she said anything, nor would she. At this point, there was nothing to say.

“You’re reminding me of when you first arrived, Jessica. I’m scared of that.” Ryan looked at me, and I stared back at him. This was nothing like that though it was certainly something.

“Uncle Ryan, no. Nothing has happened at all, not like that. I’ve just been busy.” I reached across the table to touch his arm.

“Nothing happened at the bar? You can tell me anything.” I almost choked on the water that I was sipping as I forced a laugh and shook my head.

“Okay, I don’t like the grabby college guys. I have to turn in my resignation,” I told him with a grave expression as annoyance flashed across his face. Melanie giggled as the baby let out a scream and she reached over to hand her the bottle. “No, seriously. I’ve just been considering school and what I’m going to do when I grow up. It’s hard adulting.”

“There’s no rush. You could go back next semester and just save up some money,” Ryan told me as I smiled at him.

“You’ll want to move out eventually,” Melanie chirped as he turned his head to look at his wife. “Really? She’s not going to live with us forever.”

“No, I’m sure that neither of you wants that,” I laughed as Brandon told me that he did. When I did leave, I’d miss these kids so much. We settled into more casual conversation as the food arrived and I leaned back, laughing at something Melanie said the kids did earlier that day.

When we were leaving, I looked at the bar across the street. I remembered seeing Hillary there and how jealous I felt. Now, I just felt pain. We were so fast, but we burned brightly for that time. Hillary sparked something in me that I never guessed existed and I wasn’t sure if I’d find it again.

Did I want to?

We did some shopping to grab some of the essentials, and I gazed at the shelves blankly as I felt something heavy weighing on my shoulders.
